I have discovered a few things in our travel life that we rely on. Some we have had forever and some are relatively new to us.

But the thing they have in common is that I don’t want to leave home without them!
One thing I stumbled upon last year as we packed for our Texas vacation to San Antonio and Morgan’s Wonderland. (Part of the trip excitement is the planning and prep work.) So as we browsed through travel accessories we discovered infinity scarves with hidden pockets.
We knew right away that they’re winners due to their multiple functions.
They have the practical application of hanging on the wheelchairs for quick wipe ups AND allow us to stash hotel keys, tickets, cash or other necessities without anyone the wiser. No one is going to suspect a dirty damp scarf to be holding the show tickets! Brilliant! I threw one around my own neck during boarding procedure recently. I guess I had so many tickets and IDs and such stashed in the pocket that the ticket taker began to refer to it as my personal item. Being that I often fly as cheap as possible, I could not let that happen! I quickly wrapped it around my neck saying. “no ma’am, this is my personal item” while waving my purse. Close one!
Another item we couldn’t do without is the cup holders attached to their wheelchair arms.

I have a terrible time keeping myself hydrated while running from stop to stop or taking in amusements and shows. Unfortunately, I am even worse at keeping others hydrated…I can’t feel their thirst until it’s too late. We tried many ways to keep drinks accessible and sturdy and had as many failures. Our favorite has been a holder that attaches to the chair arm and hangs low –sliding below most table tops. They get bonked often…maybe several times a day…and still hold up! They are a HUGE asset!
We also needed a place to hang our bags and purchases as we roam around.

You may have noticed a theme here…keeping my hands free! These work pretty well! Currently there is a coupon available so don’t forget to click and add it to your cart.
As much planning we do, we don’t always have things work out perfectly…including the weather.

It is stressful for everyone when dark clouds loom over a vacation day. However, it takes on a new level of stress when roaming around in a power wheelchair with downpours threatening. Years back we bought ponchos that fold up reeeealllly small to stash in our bags–just in case. They have more than paid for themselves by saving the day! I prefer just simple plastic rain ponchos so that they take up very little space and can just get thrown over whatever layers are already needed. Besides protecting the person they need to cover the controller. Disposable may be a good option for saving space, too!
And finally, our largest and longest owned travel product…a wheelchair ramp.

Believe it or not, this actually was a gift! A thoughtful friend recognized we couldn’t join in some gatherings without a lot of extra work. There was a step or two at every of their entrances. She found, purchased, and had this portable ramp delivered to us. We were so surprised and touched! This ramp is made for wheelchairs to handle a curb or a step or two. It is lightweight and folds up into its own carry bag which we keep in the back of our van. We have used it to make our way onto sidewalks, older store fronts and restaurants, houses, and numerous other places. It truly was the gift that keeps on giving!

How about you? What would you add to this list? I love to learn from other’s experiences…especially if it helps me avoid some disappointing days! What do you take on YOUR wheel life adventures?
